Travel Log: Cross-Country Road Trip Day 11

Started out the day with a ~4 mile hike in Indiana Sand Dunes National Park. We chose the Cowles Bog trail which takes you through a fen (despite the misnomer indicating a bog! Fun fact: in order to qualify as a bog an area must have a higher level of acidity than a fen), over some sand dunes, and to the Lake Michigan shoreline.

To be honest, this wasn’t my favorite hike of the trip despite it being top-rated on AllTrails. The weather was muggy and the fen was buggy. Besides…does anyone really like hiking on sand? But I’m sure at other times of year this might be a more pleasant hike.

If I return to this park I think would opt to relax at one of the beaches and also check out some of the historic houses (the Century of Progress homes are a set of homes originally built for a world’s fair and relocated to this area) inside the park. May is also supposed to be a good time to return for birding and there were other trails focused on birding areas!

From Indiana Sand Dunes we continued to Cleveland, OH to visit some friends We grabbed dinner at Heart of Gold, which had great food. The neighborhood it was in, Ohio City, is really nice with lots to do! After dinner we grabbed ice cream nearby from Mitchell’s, which let’s you view the ice cream making process from they’re second floor while enjoying your scoops. Finally we finished with drinks (I got the Lisa Frank pictured below) and some free skeeball at a barcade called Pins Mechanical Co. It was a great night with friends to cap our long stretch of driving!

Travel Log posts are my version of a travel diary so I can record what my latest adventures were and anyone interested can follow along live.
